Iztaccihuatl & Popocatepetl

Tonatiuh, the Sun God, lives with his family on 13th sky where sadness and anguish are not known. Izcozauhqui, his son, was his son who loved the gardens. One day the prince heard about lord Tonacatecuhtli's orchards. Curious he went to see them. Tha plants seemed greener and the meadows fresher and dewy. After finding a shining lake he approached quickly and in the way he met with a woman emerging from the water dressed with silver robes. They fell in love for the God's pleasure. They Spent all the time together and traveled the skies but the Gods told them not to go beyond the 13th.

The lovers knew the firmament. The curiosity to know what was below make them descend to meet the earth. Life was different there. The sun doesn't shine all the time, he rests by night. There are more colors, textures, sounds and animals than all the skies they've travelled.

The princes, discovering that the earth was more beautiful than all the celestial skies decided to stay there forever. The chosen place for they home was enar a lake at the side of valleys and mountains.

The Gods, furious for the disobedience of the couple, decided a punishment. The princess got sick all of a sudden, Izcozauhqui's efforts to heal her were vain. The woman knew that was the God's sanction, Tonatiuh let her know with his scorching rays. she was no longer allowed to live.

She told the prince to take her to a mountain in order to be near the clouds, that way, when he returned with his father, he would be able to watch her closer from the sky. Thiose were her last words, after that she stood still and white like the snow.

The prince, carrying her walked for days and nights until he reached the summit. Lit a torch near her and kept vigil, as if his princess were sleeping.

Izcozauhqui stayed at her side, without moving. She became the sleeping woman (Iztacciuhuatl) and he was the smoking hill (Popocatepetl).

Popocatépetl is actually a volcano not-so-active but still smoking, Iztaccihuatl was a volcano too but has been out of order since long time ago. If you like camping, hiking or things like that you can find them here, near México City:
